REFLECTION
Experience
Going through advanced typography was quite the challenge but the module emphasized application in real life which made it quite fun and challenging. The task I enjoyed the most was the first task, although it was only exercise, I found exploring eight typographic systems while bending a few rules was fun because I was able to create some layouts of composition that I never expected furthermore, the second exercise which is extracting elements from pictures to create letters were really interesting to play with, it is definitely a new type of exercise that makes practising design more unique and interesting. Other than that, task 2 focuses on creating a brand for yourself which I think I wasn't able to perform that well for some reason and was quite far behind, however, the application part was an enjoyable process, I experimented with the colour palette and came up with patterns and design for the collaterals. The final task, it was the hardest one and I added an additional burden to myself in creating a decorative font which was blackletter, I always liked doing calligraphy on paper so that was the reason I wanted to create one on my own. Overall, I still have room for improvement when it comes to generating ideas and designing and recording processes for the future. In conclusion, advanced typography was exhausting but it was pretty much enjoyable.
Observation
I observed that I was unable to execute a lot of my ideas since I was stunted by procrastination and lack of skills when it comes to navigating through Adobe Illustrator. I noticed that my overthinking tendencies caused me to halt my experimentation process and begin to analyse it in my mind instead of working on it, this thinking led me astray and delayed a lot of processes during Task 2 and Task 3. In addition, I noticed that keywords or research materials should be gathered before designing something so that the information would guide us through the design process instead of whipping up something blindly. In conclusion, the module has taught me to keep up to date with the latest trends and read and watch a lot of design-related content to improve myself.
Findings
The three tasks given to us had clear direction and all of them are somewhat connected, making it easier for us to use the knowledge that we have to carry forward. Task 1 exposed me to different types of typographic systems we can use to incorporate in our design and experiment creation of type from extracting real-life elements. Task 2 allows me to learn more about myself as well as creating that into a brand and name that could be a useful skill in the future. Finally, Task 3 allows me to understand the creation of fonts and recording processes throughout my journey. I found that I have learnt a lot from the module and as well as from Mr Vinod that gives me the confidence to move forward and better improve my skills.
