FINAL PROJECT: ANIMATED VISUAL NOVEL
Continuing from Project, we were required to create a one-page introduction
of the selected novel into a visual representation with at least one
animated page panel. The story should be arranged in visual sequences that
make sense and are easily understood. While creating the panels, the
transitions, arrangements and which panel visualized the best animation
should be taken into accord.
1. Chosen Act- Act 3
I chose to create Act 3 from my Digital Tryptich using the paragraph from
the story to help me plan the execution of the panels.
Prince Prospero, maddening with rage
and the shame of his own momentary cowardice,
rushed hurriedly through the six chambers,
while none followed him on account of a deadly terror that had seized
upon all. He bore aloft a drawn dagger, and had approached, in rapid
impetuosity, to within three or four feet of the retreating figure,
when the latter, having attained the extremity of the velvet
apartment, turned suddenly and confronted his pursuer.
There was a sharp cry
-- and the dagger dropped gleaming upon the sable carpet,
upon which, instantly afterwards, fell prostrate in death the Prince
Prospero. Then, summoning the wild courage of despair, a throng of the revelers at once threw themselves into the black apartment, and, seizing
the mummer, whose tall figure stood erect and motionless within the shadow of
the ebony clock, gasped in unutterable horror at finding the grave
cerements and corpse-like mask which they handled with so violent a
rudeness, untenanted by any tangible form.
And now was acknowledged the presence of the
Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one
dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life
of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay. And
the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the
Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.
2. Research:
Questions to consider before creating a comic panel:
- What are the beginning and endpoints of the page?
- What needs to happen between those two points to tell the progress from beginning to end?
- How many steps will tell that progression best and what needs to be included in each step?
- Translate those steps to panels/ frames.
- How do I expect the reader to move from one panel to the next?
- How does the last panel lead to the next page?
Leading the reader to the next page by using different type of
panels could create some type of progression through out the page such as
"zoom in" which can create the excitement or tension when telling a story.
Some panel types to consider:
- A close-in single headshot
- A close up character or object
- A distant shot of establishing scene or showing wide action
- A silhouetted shot
- A single character in the background
- one character foreground, one character background
- Action shot
Organizing panels: The gutter
The space in between the panels are called the gutter. a same width gutter
implies fairly smooth transition from panel to panel. A wider panel
however gives the reader more time and space to rest and think about the
story becoming a nice option to create in-between moments.
2. Planning and Sketching:
- In order to construct the panels in a progressed manner, I created a main action plot for each panels using key points from the paragraph of the story.
fig 2 Main Actions for each panels (week 14)
fig 3 Sketches on panel arrangements (week 14)
fig 4 Sketches on panel arrangements (week 14)
4. Digital Sketch:
I created a digital sketch of the panels on an A4 Sized canvas.

fig 8 Screengrab of progress in Adobe Illustrator (week 15)

FINAL SUBMISSION:
fig 11 Final Visual Novel (JPG) Week 15
fig 12 Animated Final Visual Novel (GIF) Week 15
fig 13 Technical file (outline) Week 15
- The panels should have one direction (left to right) so it won't be confusing to read.
REFLECTION:
Experience
The module was something new to me especially using the Adobe
Illustrator and learning different and easier methods to create designs.
I struggled a lot in remembering the shortcut keys and I was only able
to comprehend the knowledge I've known properly in the end. Overall I
found the project interesting since it involves my favourite classics by
Edgar Allan Poe, although it was a difficult process I was satisfied
with the outcome and it was fun to explore deeply into making visual
novels.
Observation
After going through the projects for this semester, this last project
became a little easier to manage since I was able to comprehend the
knowledge learned and did my best to convey and applied it in this last
project. When practicing judgement, I started to get use of analyzing
errors in my design, ask for my colleagues feedback and take into
consideration of feedbacks from other colleagues work into my work than
relying solely on the lecturer giving a one on one feedback.
Findings
In this project, I was able to discover a lot of knowledge that I have
not known which could become useful information as I venture into future
semesters. The most consequential part of the module is the knowledge
gained from the process of finishing up Project 1 to Project 3 After all
of that, it all goes down to creating good designs that are unique to
ourselves in the end.
