Week 2

  1. Introduction to the Module assignments and requirements.

  2. Briefing on the first exercise-research proposal.

Progress Remarks:

Start looking into the topics of UI/UX under the theme Design Culture and Design Principle

Reflection:

-I realized that my scope of search was too broad and the information given was jumbled up without much organization. Furthermore, I had to look into the materials given to further develop my understanding in creating a good research proposal.

Findings:

I relied heavily on articles from websites instead of using modes like google scholar to search for more information.

fariha

General Feedback:

-Miss Yip Jinchi reminded us that the work and weekly progress should always be presented to the lecturers weekly, to gain insights.

-Attendance is given specifically at 11pm and 1pm only.

Specific Feedback:

-Did not receive any specific feedback this week.

Week 3

  1. Present research proposal progress

  2. Rewrite the draft of progress.

Progress remarks:

Recreate the draft according to the feedback given, start writing weekly feedbacks after every class.

Reflection:

The proposals that I have created are more heavily related to secondary data. Furthermore, the research proposal I have created should be reduced slightly and the lecturer had quoted “too ambitious” for a 14 weeks research paper, the content should be narrowed down and easily achieved in the few weeks given to us.

Observation:

-I realized that my purpose of research wasn’t clear and concise so I need to read more research papers on Google Scholars

Findings:

-I was also introduced to the Bloom Taxonomy, which is a design thinking method that focuses on hierarchical thinking processes. This diagram has shown which level of stage I should focus on and become a guide for me to further explore the topic to come up with a strong research proposal.

fariha

General Feedback:

-Research better

-Narrow Down the topic

-Find articles that don’t rely on anything on media

Specific Feedback:

-The content should be reduced slightly.

-User Interface and User experience are two things that go hand in hand, so I need to relate UI into the research as well.

-Have secondary data that can support the process or idea.

-More specific content- such as focusing more on the website for e-commerce.

Week 4

  1. Finish the research proposal

  2. Get feedback from Miss  Hayati

Progress remarks:

I need to use paraphrasing from the articles in writing my problem statement.

Reflection:

-I decided to narrow down my research topic to focusing on understanding the impact of color on user’s engagement in e-commerce websites.

-My problem statement structure is a little loose and out of topic, and needs to be rewritten.

Observation:

-I realized that my problem statement relies heavily on my idea on the topic without much thought on the evidence backing it up.

fariha

General Feedback:

-Go through the critical review and extract information.

-The research topic should be in the topic of UI/UX and not involve subtopics like management or psychology.

Specific Feedback:

-Read through the problem statement again.

Week 6

  1. Continue doing critical review

  2. Find at least one method of collecting primary data for next week's class.

Progress remarks: Looking through the notes and examples given on critical review and writing one for the next class, to get feedback. I had to rewrite my problem statement since it was still broad and tried to narrow down into the field of e-commerce.

Reflection:

I became so lost and confused since I’m not sure on how to go about the critical review because I wasn’t able to get the greenlight on the articles that I have found. However, I decided to focus on restructuring my research proposal instead during the free time.

Observation:

-The articles I’ve come across are broad in terms of the region studied since it was difficult to find recent articles that pertain to supporting evidence in my chosen topic.

fariha

NO FEEDBACK GIVEN

Week 7

  1. Prepare at least one method of primary data

  2. Discuss research proposal progress as well as the articles chosen to Miss Hayati

Progress remarks: Must narrow down the topic into one specific region and find articles that are based on that region itself. Need to rewrite the entire research proposal again.

Reflection

It’s quite exhausting to know that my topic was considered to still be vast, however, after getting some ideas on how to narrow down the search I had a bit of clarification on where the topic is going.

Observation:

-I realised that my research proposal content was still inconsistent and contents were not specific enough. (I need to change that)

fariha

General Feedback:

Specific Feedback;

-Try searching keywords on google scholars :Colour, UI/UX, E-commerce.

-The topic is okay but narrow it down to one region and make sure to put into consideration the primary data that has to be taken in assignment 3.

-Different countries or culture have different interpretation on what colour means

-Find a website that is up to date and people still use the website now.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING WEEK

Week 9

  1. Prepare primary data methods suggestions

  2. Create the google survey form

Progress remarks: There are few changes that needs to be made in Objectives, Problem Statement and Questions. After that, the primary data questions can be decided afterwards.

Reflection:

Despite the proposal having a clear view and where I want to go I need, I need to further understand the direction I am planning to go.

Observation:

The choices of words that I have used for the objective and problem statement have caused misconception on how I wanted to go about the research, as much as I don’t want to, I have to revise my problem statement and further draft a new objective that fits my topic research.

Findings:

During the discussion, I was able to find information on proper citation that requires indent within the written citations. The discussion with Miss Hayati was also a clarification for me to keep my work on track without swaying into different topics all together.

fariha

General feedback:

-Go through the marking rubrics and reflect on the previous assignments to further improve the proposal and next assignments.

-All assignments are put in continuous slide.

Specific Feedback:

R. OBJECTIVES:

-Research objectives are too ambitious for the short span of time. The objectives are too broad.

-The wordings in objective should be changed accordingly to bloom taxonomy guide to undergraduate studies.

-Research question=objectives

P.STATEMENT:

-For the problem statement, it should have been made before the objectives.

-The problem needs to be focus on e-commerce.

-In-text citation should be in the problem statement even after paraphrasing

PRIMARY METHODS:

-Focus on finding groups with users that have high engagement in the website.

-Miss Hayati gave some examples on how to create qualifying question techniques such as focusing on whether they have high engagement in e-commerce platforms? or do they prefer other websites over shopee.

Week 10

Task to do:

  1. Continue creating the survey

  2. Refine the questions for the survey

Progress remarks: Reconsider and rewrite the questions made and group the questions with section heads (navigation and visual design).

Observation:

Creating survey needs a lot of consideration about the choices of words used to formulate the questions. I realised that my negative view of things and might affect the people’s  who answers view on what you’re trying to gain information. I realised that the questions I’ve formulated were biased and only focuses on the negative aspects of Shopee platform which is not good.

Reflection:

To understand and create a non-bias surveys I need to look into my colleagues and ask around on how to make a neutral questions

Findings:

Struggling a lot to formulate the questions.

fariha

Specific Feedback:

-Miss Hayati suggested sectioning the questions, put numbers and use observation studies to ensure that the questions don’t become bias.

-Find justification as to why certain age numbers are placed within the survey.

-She also suggested focusing on the user’s background(using the platform I’m researching often)

Week 11

Task to do:

  1. Refine Survey

  2. Began to create presentation slides

  3. Handout the survey

Progress remarks: I was still refining the survey, making sure that the questions are neutral and use proper graphical images to help people navigate.

Observation

During this stage, I began to struggle a lot in promoting the survey and getting participants. I tried to promote it in my class chat group, friends, family and even use platforms such as reddit and facebook to get responses. During these time, I noticed that the survey was collecting data from participants that are not Shopee users, I was confused at first since I made it clear that I wanted avid shopee users and I realised that I did not change a few settings on my google form to exit participant that does not reach the target goal

Findings:

I found that I was able to spread my survey at student platforms on social media so I tried collecting data from there

fariha

General feedback:

-Ensure that the video presentation is 5-8 minutes long.

Week 12

Task to do:

  1. Keep collecting data

  2. Consider a second method

Progress remarks: Ms Hayati is reviewing everyone's approach this week and providing feedback so that those who haven't sent out their forms can make improvements.

Observation:

I realised that my survey can be backed up with another secondary method like observation studies or online focus group

Findings:

Some of my questions were not strong enough to validate strength and weakness so I had to look through the research objective again

fariha

General feedback:

-Ms Yip Jinchi briefed us on the fourth and last assignment

-We are allowed to become creative on our mode of presentation

Week 13

Task to do:

  1. Write a script for the presentation

  2. Start making rhe report

Progress remarks: I was still waiting for the survey responses while occasionally reposting on reddit.

Observation:

I observed that I was lacking in terms of data so I began brainstorming what kind of secondary method I can use at a short notice

fariha

General feedback:

-Make sure to keep the audio of the presentation clear

-make the presentation slide interesting and visually appealing.

Specific Feedback:

-Look through the research objective again

Week 14

Task to do

  1. Prepare for the zoom presentation

  2. write script

Progress remarks: We were instructed to work on our final reflection last week using the Google Classroom examples. As usual, the instructor was monitoring everyone's progress and reviewing our final reflection.

Observation:

I felt so distraught to the thought that I didn’t reach my goal, I began frantically looking for participants for my focus group and I began to wonder if observation studies could be an option

fariha

Specific Feedback:

-I wasn’t able to collect minimum 80 participants, I didn’t get the chance to opt for a secondary method therefore I needed to create a secondary method.

REFLECTION:

Experience

Going through the design research methodology, there were a lot of things you need to consider when choosing a topic to research. A lot of research and consideration of available secondary data is necessary to ensure that our research topic does not run on idealistic perceptions but instead with solid evidence from previous studies that had been conducted thoroughly before. Going through the first assignment until the end had been an arduous journey of getting ideas rejected and fixing the issues within the data collected through secondary data. Of all the assignments, primary data collection was the one I struggled with the most since I had a lot of trouble collecting and looking for respondents to give honest answers on the survey itself,  however, through a short reflection, I realised that as a researcher it's essential to have a backup secondary method to fall through just in case the survey does not reach the target audience.

Observation:

Throughout these modules, I realised that I have a lot to improve on in terms of conducting proper research, looking through various articles did open my mind to a lot of other perspectives or insights that existed in the realm of design. Each planned method requires a thorough understanding and a strong objective to move forward with any research, otherwise, it goes downhill.

Findings

The three tasks given to us correlate to one another, despite a little misunderstanding here and there, I was able to understand the well-thought procedures when conducting a body of research. In my opinion, I feel like I could improve more in terms of conducting research that has been properly taken into consideration rather than expecting failure and acting on impulse. In conclusion, taking this module was difficult but I am satisfied that I was able to gain some experiences that can be applied in the future when researching certain elements in design is necessary to create something innovative.
