PROJECT 1B: EXERCISE 1Photo Manipulation

For this exercise we were required to study and learn about Quick Selection Tool, Brush Tool, Color correction tool, etc. with the photos provided. The task is divided into two sub tasks, the first part is using Shazam as a subject to apply in the background of Hearst Mansion and the second part, using our own pictures taken in good lighting at an eye-level to be inserted in the background using the same steps as PART 1.

PART 1: SHAZAM

PART 2: MY REFLECTION

fig 1.3 Part 2 of Project 2A exercise week 6 (11/5/2023)

STEPS:

1. Quick Selection tool: Choose the subject (Shazam/The Figure)>Copy to another layer.
2. Ctrl + T (free transform): Adjusting the scale of figure.
3. Ctrl + '+'/ '-' or alt+mouse: to zoom in or out.
4. Image> Adjustment> Match Colour.
5. Brush tool>shadow behind figure>Gaussian blur and lower opacity.
6. Duplicate figure> rotate: -100(height)> pen tool> choose figure> working path> selection change> mask layer.
7. Adjust: Brightness, Contrast, Fade, Hue and Saturation> Apply Gaussian Blur.

Exercise 2-Part 2: Double Exposure

For this exercise we were instructed to watch a timelapse video on how to apply double exposure to photos.

Project 2: myTiger Poster Design

For this assignment, we were required to choose one Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) or more and create a poster that portrays clear message or awareness. It took a long time to brainstorm on the poster since the message across should be clearly shown in the poster itself.

Research

Chosen goal: Life Below Water

fig 2.0 Goal #14 Life Below Water infographic

Target:

  1. Reduce Marine Pollution.
  2. Protect and restore ecosystems.
  3. Reduce ocean acidification.
  4. Sustainable fishing.
  5. Conserve coastal and marine areas.
  6. End Subside contributing to overfishing.
  7. Increase the economic benefits from sustainable use of marine resources.
  8. Increase scientific knowledge, research and technology for ocean health.
  9. Support small scale fishes.
  10. Implement and enforce international sea law.

Research Summary:

The topic I’ve chosen from the 12 goals is Life Below Water. In the stated topic, I decided to focus the design on Marine Pollution which is a combination of chemical and trash that comes from land is washed or drifted away into the ocean. Some of the causes of marine pollution are pesticides/chemical substances are flowed into the water, oil spillage, littering non biodegradable items such as plastic bags and many more. Marine pollution could threaten the marine life, chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus results in blooming algae “eutrophication” resulting in lack of oxygen below water and increased of CO2 gas, fishes depends on the pH level of the water, increase of acidity can kill them. Other than that, manufacturing factories turning fossil fuels into plastics pollutes the water. The tiny pellets produced by these facilities often spill into waterways to be eaten by birds and fish. In addition to the pellets, crackers pollute our rivers and oceans with nasty chemicals that can be toxic to aquatic animals and accumulate in the food chain. What can be done to improve/protect the marine life? Some of the solutions are conserving water at home, bringing our own bag to buy groceries in order to reduce plastic bag usage and the instigating prohibition of fishing in international water to reduce overfishing. In conclusion, the poster should focus on the causes and effect of marine pollution in generations to come if inaction from humans continues.

Sketches

Using the references, I sketched out a lot of ideas that focuses solely on the causes and effects of plastic (first target: Marine Pollution).

fig 2.1 Various Sketches for the Poster week 7 (5/5/2023)

fig 2.2 Variation Sketch on idea #1 week 7 (5/5/2023)

Most of the sketch ideas were difficult to execute, lacking in quality images that I was able to get my hands on. Therefore, I decided to further develop sketch idea #1 as the final presentation for the poster.

  • The overall composition was too dull and empty, it does not reflect the contrast of causes and effects.
  • The image of manufacturing factories in the frame is not visible, not able to tell what it was actually portraying.

Title:
Plastic Peril: Starving Seas and the Urgency to Act

The poster emphasizes on the cause of marine pollution, manufacturing factories producing increasing amount of plastics, slowly closing the window to a healthy ocean for marine creatures. By emphasizing this issue, the poster aims to raise awareness about the threat posed to marine creatures and overall health of the ocean. The representation of a whale transitioning is a symbolism of marine creatures digesting small debris of plastics causing them to die of starvation, as their digestive system become unable to process and extract nutrients from plastic waste. The visual imagery of the whale is a reminder of the urgency to address marine pollution and take action in protecting marine creatures and the ocean.
